Knuckles OF SIN was probably ane of the best regency romances I'd had the pleasure of reading in a while. There are 2 things I dear in romance novels: gamma heroes & slow-burn romances. This book had both. I was able to recommend information technology to all my friends in skilful organized religion & was delighted to see that they enjoyed information technology, too!

ONCE UPON A MOONLIT NIGHT popped upward on Netgalley recently & I was super excited when I was approved. It's a novella following Hippolyta Royle after she escapes from the mad duke. I liked Hippolyta in DUKE OF SIN, and was interested in seeing what her story would exist like.

Unfortunately, OUAMN misses in a major way. Hippolyta is fabricated into a human foot-stomping, tongue-sticking-outting impotent heroine whose only purpose is to serve as a foil for the hero.

The hero is a jerk, who, when he happens on the scared, mud-covered heroine, assumes that she is either a whore or an actress and doesn't fail to inform her as such. She attempts to correct him and tell him that she's really a rich heiress (totally a smart thing to do when people are trying to kidnap y'all for your wealth), merely he just haw-haws, and continues to insult her.

DUKE OF SIN was so good that I was expecting to be a lilliputian disappointed by whatsoever sequel that came afterwards (considering it's hard to write two major hits in a row), but this just seemed like it was in a different class birthday- it was rushed, the romance was unpleasant, the hero was a jerk, the heroine was ridiculous, and somehow the characters decided they loved each other even though the hero did null but insult her & ogle her chest. I'm hoping that this was a fluke; the consequence of writing a novella besides quickly and making the rookie mistake of assuming that rushed is ok in a novella.

For what information technology'south worth, I did like the hush-hush about the heroine even if I didn't like the fashion it was broached. Also, the hero has a pet mongoose, and I thought that was neat. :)

1 to one.5 stars.

Well, I didn't look at the review before starting, only I girded my loins equally I started waiting for it all to fall autonomously.

…and waited

Ummm…it didn't happen. I didn't detect the bad bit. I'g non discounting someone else's opinion, each to their ain and all that jazz, but I'm not sure what the bad bit was. Wait, it wasn't perfect by whatsoever means. The sexy times were a wee bit modern and very steamy (but who am I to question whether back in the olden days they talked dirty or non). It also all kind of fell into place a scrap as well easily and the characters did autumn in love very quickly. Just…I read romance to escape from reality and this little treat hit the spot for me.

Hippolyta and Matthew have a very unusual first meeting and neither of them is in a position that shows themselves off in a favourable light. Hippolyta has escaped kidnapping and Matthew is returning from his overseas adventures to practice his duty now that he is an Earl. Matthew doesn't believe that the dingy and smelly Hippolyta could peradventure be a rich heiress and she thinks he's a dishevelled and rude working homo in need of funds.

The story has a touch of mystery mixed into their adventure. There is seduction and temptation that neither can deny. Both characters are also learning to accept the courage to be true to yourself. While it wasn't perfect, it was a perfectly fine niggling story to reply my questions and give me the historical romance prepare I was looking for.

I can't wait for Duke of Pleasure and I hope my guess is right in who the newest Ghost of St Giles is.

Summary (from Goodreads):

From New York Times bestselling writer Elizabeth Hoyt comes a delightful Maiden Lane novella that begins once upon a moonlit night—and ends wickedly, wonderfully always subsequently...

Hippolyta Royle is running for her life. Pursued by hounds on a cold rainy night, the heiress flags down a passing railroad vehicle and throws herself at the mercy of the motorcoach'south occupant. Whoever this handsome traveler may be, he is her but hope to escape a terrible fate. But should he agree to escort her to safety, he'due south in for much more than he bargained for.

At first Matthew Mortimer doesn't believe Hippolyta'due south story, that she's a fabulously wealthy heiress who's been kidnapped. He assumes she's a ragamuffin, an extra, or worse. But once his new travel companion washes the mud from her surprisingly lovely face, and they share a breathtaking osculation, there is no turning back.

What I Liked:

Oh how this book was fun, sweetness, steamy, and heartwarming! The Maiden Lane serial is ane of my favorite historical romance series (if not my favorite). I was beyond excited to encounter that Hoyt would exist publishing a novella - especially when it was revealed that Hippolyta Royle would be the protagonist. I LOVE how Hoyt places Hippolyta's story.

You don't take to have read the previous books in the series to empathise and enjoy this novella, but I recommend you read at least Duke of Sin (heck, the whole series, only Duke of Sin for sure). I mention book ten specifically because Once Upon a Moonlit Night starts exactly equally a scene from Duke of Sin ends - with Hippolyta running from Ainsdale Castle, after Bridget rescues her and sends her away with a footling money.

Hippolyta has been running from the hounds that are chasing her, courtesy of the knuckles who kidnapped her. She runs into the road and stops a railroad vehicle, endemic by Matthew Mortimer. Matthew doesn't believe her when she says that she is Hippolyta Royle, the richest heiress in London, but he lets her in the carriage anyway. Matthew has just returned from traveling around the world; his cousins have passed away, and he has been left the earldom. But he doesn't tell Hippolyta all of that. No, he plans on dumping her off at the nearest posting in, and going about his business. But whether or not he thinks she is a beggar, he can't help only experience a little protective over her... and attracted to her. And Hippolyta can't aid but experience condom with Matthew, and more than grateful. Simply what will happen when Matthew finds out that Hippolyta wasn't lying about who she was?

Ahhh, this novella was lovely. Unremarkably I avoid novellas similar the plague, merely I honey Elizabeth Hoyt and the Maiden Lane series, and there was no way I was missing Hippolyta'south story. And information technology turned out to exist then fun so sweetness!

Hippolyta is kind and a picayune innocent, merely too a picayune regal. From the start, Matthew doesn't quite think she'southward a beggar, merely he doesn't believe her when she says she'southward Hippolyta Royle. She is inquisitive and intelligent, and much more a rich, pretty girl.

Matthew! He used to be Mr. Mortimer, a immature cartographer. At present he is going to London to take on an earldom, and become the Earl of Paxton. Matthew is a little gruff, and he doesn't similar Hippolyta at all, at beginning. In fact, he doesn't want annihilation to do with her. But something won't allow him let her get.

The romance between these two is and then fiery! It's a practiced hate-to-love romance, which I love. At first, Hippolyta is a little haughty withal desperate, and Matthew is irritated and in disbelief (simply he doesn't ignore her pleas for help). It was then cute to meet them get from absolute irritation and badgerer with each other, to passion and beloved. While this is only a novella, time does pass, plenty for me to *believe* their human relationship.

Half the story is spent on the route, with Matthew helping Hippolyta go to some posting in, and then Hippolyta's begetter finding her starts the 2nd one-half. What ensues is a lilliputian bit of chaos! But I dearest how things worked out. Matthew and Hippolyta are such a sweet pair, passionate and caring and protective of each other.

Yes, there were some steamy scenes in this book. It's a novella, simply there were at least two (mayhap 3?). Hoyt never skimps on those, which I dearest! *fans self*

Overall, this novella is totally worth the read. Hippolyta and Matthew are unlike any other couple in the Maiden Lane series - though y'all could say that each couple in the serial is wholly unique (which is totally true!). I'm glad Hoyt decided to write about Hippolyta specifically!

What I Did Non Like:

Obviously I wanted More than! I mean this in the best of ways.

Would I Recommend It:

I highly recommend this novella, if you're a Hoyt fan, and/or fan of the Maiden Lane series. Historical romance fans should definitely give this serial a chance! My personal favorite is Duke of Midnight, with Duke of Sin slightly behind. Only slightly!

Rating:

4.5 stars. I'm rounding downward to 4 stars considering yous all know me and my pickiness nigh the v-star rating. I am such a huge fan of this novella, and this series in full general!

What do you practice when y'all stop reading Oathbringer and nothing else fantasy is going to compare for a little while? If y'all are me yous continue a romance kick for awhile.

Hippolyta Royal has been of the outskirts of the Maiden Lane series for awhile at present. In Duke of Sin she was kidnapped by our favorite bad male child and helped to escape but then we go nothing of if she made it back to London. This is that story of how she flagged down a carriage while completely bedraggled and was able to catch both a elevator and a husband on the manner dorsum to London.

Matthew is pretty downwardly to earth for an Earl. Well that could be because he has been making maps of Republic of india for years and has only recently returned to England because of his contempo inheritance of the Earldom. But he knows a scam when he sees 1, he is a man of the world after all and the stinky, dingy, tangled mess of a woman sitting across from him in the wagon tin can not be an heiress. Showtime off her proper noun is Hippolyta, udderly ridiculous. She should take picked a better cover story, but he will see her back to London non-the-less.

This was a cute story of mistaken identity and getting to know someone when you don't take whatever expectations of them due to championship and station. It unfolds pretty well if fast but this is a novella so no time to lollygag on the romantic forepart.

My only complaint is the blackmail. Information technology has been a continuing theme for Hippolyta in the other books that she is being blackmailed simply the actual reason for the blackmail comes to light in this book and I thought it was kinda soft. Maybe in this time catamenia ''the reason' is a big deal just it didn't really seem like information technology and I honestly assumed that everyone one London already had some idea.

Still a fast read with a lighter tone than a few of the other books of this series and a good pallet cleanser.

Readers of Knuckles of Sin, the recently released tenth book in Elizabeth Hoyt'due south hugely popular Maiden Lane series volition recall that one of the many nefarious plots engineered by the Machiavellian Duke of Montgomery was the kidnapping of Miss Hippolyta Royle, the wealthiest heiress in England. I admit, that loose plot-thread did se Readers of Knuckles of Sin, the recently released 10th book in Elizabeth Hoyt'southward hugely pop Maiden Lane serial will recollect that one of the many nefarious plots engineered by the Machiavellian Knuckles of Montgomery was the kidnapping of Miss Hippolyta Royle, the wealthiest heiress in England. In that book, she was freed by the Duke'due south housekeeper, the enterprising Bridget Crumb, who helped her to escape onto the moors – and so nosotros heard nix more of her. I admit, that loose plot-thread did seem rather strange, only fortunately, anyone wondering what happened to Miss Royle afterward she fled Ainsdale Castle can put their minds at remainder, as her fate is revealed in the novella, Once Upon a Moonlit Night.

She stumbles into the path of an oncoming wagon, which – fortunately – stops then that its aroused occupant can inquire her what the hell she'south playing at. Dirty, bedraggled and smelling of sheep rather than roses, Hippolyta's assertion that she is a wealthy heiress is promptly dismissed by Matthew Mortimer, explorer, cartographer and newly minted just improverished Earl of Paxton. He's tired from his journey home from the Indian Body of water, disgruntled because he had to make information technology at all and in no mood to humour a down-on-her-luck actress/thief/tart.

The start part of the novella is a road-trip romance in which the two protagonists get off on completely the wrong human foot but, during the course of a few days, come to realise that perchance there is more than to the other than meets the eye. The sparks fly from the kickoff and the air between them crackles with sexual tension, fifty-fifty though Matthew is pretty abrasive for the showtime part of the journey and makes no bones about the fact that he believes Hippolyta to exist a whore. By the 2d twenty-four hour period, however, they really outset talking to each other and he starts to wonder if perhaps he'southward misjudged her. Simply before he can really brand his mind upward, the two of them are discovered in the yard of a coaching inn past her begetter who is outraged at the thought that his daughter has spent several days unchaperoned with a homo, leaving Matthew with footling option but to ask for her hand.

The story so fast-forwards a couple of weeks to the jerky hymeneals – and the nuptials night – and the reappearance of a figure from Hippolyta's past who threatens to expose a cached family underground (that isn't much of a secret to anyone who has read Duke of Sin) which could ruin her in society.

Once Upon a Moonlit Nighttime is an entertaining, quick read that is besides-written equally one would expect from this author, but it does suffer from "novella-itis" in that it feels rather rushed, peculiarly in the 2nd half. The central characters are reasonably well fatigued, and while Matthew is a fleck of a grouch to start with, in his favour, he'south the type of hero who, once he realises what he wants, doesn't dither or deny, he goes for it. But I couldn't quite work out what happened to Hippolyta, who has been an intriguing, exotic figure in the before books in which she has appeared. She begins this tale equally spirited and able to give every bit proficient as she gets, merely then turns into a wimpy damsel in distress immediately afterward her wedding night. She receives a blackmail annotation and just runs off instead of having a elementary conversation with Matthew, and I thoroughly disliked the utilize of such an obvious contrivance to create dramatic tension.

Ultimately, this is a story of two … non quite halves. The kickoff, in which the writer develops the relationship between Hipployta and Matthew and skilfully brings the sexual attraction between them to the boil gets 4 stars, but the second, which is a bit of a let-down, gets three, hence my overall grade. I enjoyed the novella and I'm glad Ms. Hoyt took the opportunity to tie up the loose ends of Hippolyta's story, simply I think it needed a bit more fourth dimension and space in which to play out.

Maybe a flake too crude on the first fourth dimension deflowering of the woman, not that she seemed to heed, but goes with his character I judge.

The heroine I was a bit disappointed in. Not that there'due south annihilation wrong with her per se, but in that location was a lot of buildup from other books most her and for some reason I thought she'd exist special. Little Hippolyta cleans up very well and soon Matthew can't fight the desire and attraction brewing betwixt them.

This was a fun, short and steamy romance! I loved the push and pull between Matthew and Hippolyta! In this delicious offer from Elizabeth Hoyt, readers are thrown back into the Maiden Lane earth and are once again reunited with Hippolyta Royle. At present if yous've read the previous full-length book in this series, Duke OF SIN, and so you may be familiar with Hippolyta. She was the woman who Val kidnapped and wanted to make his wife before the heroine released her. So when I say that she's been through a lot, I really mean it. The poor girl has been so strong though and I obviously had an immediate connection with her character from the very first folio.

As we see her trying to return back to her home safely, she encounters another traveler named Matthew Mortimer. He's handsome, intelligent, but too extremely wary of her. He doesn't believe her when she says she is Hippolyta Royle instead he thinks of her as a beggar and an actress, trying to seduce men forth the route and taking them for all he'southward worth when he least suspects it.

And even so, he returns for her when he leaves her without dress or coin to feed herself, unable to comport the fact that she is alone. A romance blooms between the two, but for a short story, it's quite believable. I will say that it took me a while to get into Matthew's character but because he was then mean to Hippolyta in the beginning. She'd been through some terrible things already that she doesn't deserve judgment from a complete stranger likewise. I felt a sure protectiveness towards Hippolyta'southward character and that was why Matthew had and then much against him in the beginning. And however, by the end of the story, I was only in dearest with him as Hippolyta was.

So I would say that if you are thinking of trying this series, start at the kickoff. You lot can happily jump into this story, however, you should read Knuckles OF SIN first I retrieve since that'due south where Hippolyta's journey really starts. I'g glad Elizabeth Hoyt took the fourth dimension to write this story for her. I never thought I'd come across her again, but now she has a HEA and I think out of all the characters in this serial, Hippolyta was the one that deserved it the most.

I really enjoyed this latest addition to Elizabeth Hoyt's fabulous Maiden Lane series. This novella follows Hippolyta Royle's "adventures" after escaping the clutches of the wicked Duke of Montgomery (Knuckles OF SIN)

I love the unconventional first coming together between Hippolyta and Matthew. I had a vivid movie of the wet, bedraggled, muddied, smelly Hippolyta trying to convince a disbelieving Matthew that she is telling the truth and she is really an heiress! Information technology's hardly surprising he doesn't believe a word and is convinced that she is either a beggar, an extra or a whore. Given the circumstances, I tin forgive his boorish mental attitude and rather coarse linguistic communication and to his credit he does take pity on her and offer to give her a lift to the side by side boondocks.

Well, it was a cold and wet night subsequently all, and he had a flake of soft spot for scamps who could tell a cock-and-balderdash story with a straight face.

Matthew is both surprised and impressed by Hippolyta's intelligence and wit and starts to have doubts about his original assumptions. He also feels very protective towards her while she feels safe with Matthew. I dearest the scene where Matthew walks in on Hippolyta while she is soaking naked in a tin bath, and he sees for the first fourth dimension just how beautiful she is.

Ms Hoyt is splendid at building sexual tension and those who bask their romances with a goodly dose of sexy times will be more satisfied(no pun intended).

I adore Hippolyta's spirit when she attends Viscount D'Arque's ball, knowing the potential scandal it would create and I love how Matthew is a solid presence, supporting and encouraging her.

…she stumbled a chip.
Simply Matthew caught her so that none of those watching could encounter the hesitation. "Head held loftier, Princess, "he murmured in her ear.

D'Arque and his grandmother, Lady Wimple, also rally round to offer their influential back up and information technology was wonderful to meet Hippolyta triumph. I think Lady Wimple sums it up perfectly.

"Well! This is all very satisfactory. I tin can't retrieve when I've seen a scandal with greater dash."

I cheered when the blackmailer is well and truly hoisted past his own petard and thoroughly thrashed by Matthew. I as well enjoyed seeing, Sir George, Hippolyta's begetter, put the final boom in the blackmailer's bury.

Terminal but not to the lowest degree, I must mention Tommy Teapot, Matthew's pet mongoose, a real charmer who steals very scene he'due south in.

My only criticism is that I would love to take spent more time with Hippolyta and Matthew and see them enjoying their Happy Ever After.

Favourite Romantic Quotes

"Beggar or heiress. Princess or pauper. I didn't give a goddamn who or what you were, Hippolyta, I just wanted y'all."

He'd stood by her, had believed in her when she'd been hopeless. Had rescued her and argued with her and fabricated love with her and she…She loved him, her pirate, her husband, her Matthew.

MY VERDICT: This novella is a must read for all fans of the Maiden Lane series. For those who have still to read this bright series…what are you waiting for?

This novella can be read every bit a stand up alone, but if you have read Knuckles of Sin (if you haven't yous must, must, must) you volition recognize our heroine, Hippolyta Royle. The heroine in Duke of Sin helps Hippolyta escape, and this is where Once Upon a Moonlit Night starts. Hippolyta is running in the dark and rain from hounds chasing her and a carriage happens by. Hippolyta is soaked, extremely muddy and not dressed well. She begs the person inside the motorbus to permit her in, and he finally agrees.

This man is named Matthew Mortimer. He is an earl who has spent the last two years in India creating maps and collecting scientific things. When news reached him that his cousin had died and he was expected home to run the family's failing estate, Matthew hesitantly agreed. He looks upon this bedraggled, dirty person who claims to be wealthy and is sure she is telling him a tale. He calls her princess merely also is certain she is an actress or something worse. But, he lets her in his railroad vehicle until they get to the next boondocks.

As they travel, they realize they have mutual interests. Hippolyta was born in India (Matthew doesn't believe her of class) and she is well educated when he speaks of maps and even when his pet mongoose makes an appearance (Tommy Teapot the mongoose is super cute in this volume). Matthew starts to feel protective of Hippolyta and allows her to travel in his carriage on the way to London.

They are and so beautiful together! Hippolyta thinks Matthew is just a beast for being so rude to her and thinking she is a lowly actress. But she also becomes quite attracted to him and they have really squeamish chemistry. Being novella length this one is quick but well done. It felt like a complete love story to me. Highly recommend

Entertaining for me but I'm a petty bit bothered and bellyaching by the heroine's "I'm a princess so serve me" attitude. Matthew Mortimer is a mapmaker who has recently returned to England after unexpectedly inheriting an earldom. Their meet cute in the heart of a rainy English dark is fun. Matthew accidentally rescues Hippolyta, and they are forced to spend a few days travelling together.

Due to the length limitations of a novella, I usually find them pretty pointless, as the story tin can't actually develop. But now and then you read a good ane, like this. Yes, it all felt a bit rushed, but it was still an enjoyable read. Information technology would have been four stars for me, except I found some of the language and descriptions in the sex scenes just too explicit for my taste. To me it was verging on porn. I take constitute this in a couple of other books in this series too. I know many readers love this way, but I personally prefer a little more modesty and discretion in the sex scenes. Sometimes, a chip less is actually more than.

I also call up there was a missed opportunity for a complete novel focussing on Hippolyta. She is a fascinating grapheme, and Matthew is a skillful match for her, but after the intriguing glimpses of her in some of the other books, it seemed like her own incredible story would unfold ane day. Well, it did, but in a slightly rushed and abbreviated fashion.

Oh well, onto Duke of Pleasure :)

This novella was so. much. fun!! I was excited to read Once Upon a Moonlit Dark when I found out it would be Hippolyta's story – her appearance in Duke of Sin had me intrigued past her character, and I'm glad we get to observe out what happens to her subsequently certain events in the previous volume. Hippolyta and Matthew's romance is pure fun and sexiness – if yous want something short and sweet, this novella is perfect for historical romance lovers!

After escaping from a man who kidnapped her, heiress Hippolyta is out in the cold, rainy night all by herself – until she sees a carriage passing by and tries to flag it down. Inside lies Matthew Mortimer, a wickedly handsome homo who doesn't appear to believe Hippolyta's claims of being an heiress, but reluctantly gives her a ride to the nearest inn. He thinks she's a beggar, so he hides the fact that he'due south an earl so she won't accept advantage of him. But being stuck with 1 another in such shut proximity proves to be difficult with the chemistry brewing between them. They aren't who they think they are, all the same they want each other anyway – only what happens when truth of their heritages is revealed?

He lifted his caput and covered her rima oris over again, kissing her desperately, like a man who had been deprived of light and sound and awareness. Of life itself.
She was his heartbeat.

I adored the dissimilarity between Hippolyta and Matthew – she's a haughty however innocent heiress who's e'er got her mentum pointed upwardly, and he'south a gruff, sarcastic, newly appointed earl who doesn't want the earldom. They're irritated with each other for a bulk of the book, and it was fun to watch them slowly fall for one another in between the hilarious banter.

One time Upon a Moonlit Night is a satisfying novella I really take no complaints about. The characters are developed and lovable – Hippolyta and Matthew are so, and so beautiful together! – and the steaminess is off the charts despite the short book length. I'd definitely recommend this one for fans of the Maiden Lane series, especially if y'all've read Duke of Sin. Plus, there'due south pet mongoose! If nothing else, at least read this novella for the pet mongoose.

"Ragamuffin or heiress. Princess or pauper. I didn't give a goddamn who or what y'all were, Hippolyta, I but wanted yous."

I continue to adore Elizabeth Hoyt'southward writing and found this to exist an entertaining read for a summer afternoon.

Hippolyta Royle is considered to be quite a novelty due to the fact that she is the richest heiress in the country and that was she was born in Bharat. In Duke of Sin, she is kidnapped past the Duke of Montgomery and aided in her escape past the heroine of that volume. This story takes identify as Hippolyta is trying to make her way dorsum to London. She comes beyond a carriage and begs for assistance. Matthew Mortimer has recently returned to England from Bharat and, while he wants to help the dirty immature adult female, he has a difficult time believing that she is a wealthy heiress.

I loved Hippolyta! She was a fascinating grapheme in other Maiden Lane books and she didn't disappoint in this book. I admired her resilience and her intellect especially. Matthew was not every bit developed as I would have liked him to be, but he was still easy to root for. I especially enjoyed the scenes where he talked about his passion for maps and Republic of india. As a couple, Matthew and Hippolyta were but adorable. They didn't desire to be attracted to one some other, simply couldn't help it.

If you lot want a example of Elizabeth Hoyt's writing, Once Upon a Moonlit Night would be a practiced place to outset. It has her traditionally unorthodox characters along with a fun plot and even an ambrosial animate being. Tommy Teapot the mongoose stole every scene he was in! Equally ever, I can't wait for more than from this author and this series.

I received an eARC of this book from Forever Publishing via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

She'due south decrepit and covered in mud when she runs in front of Matthew's wagon and begs for aid.

Hippolyta has no thought Matthew is a newly appointed earl and he doesn't believe her claims that she is a lady. It gives them both the freedom to human action outside the bounds of propriety. It's nothing too racy, simply there'southward some cute banter and sexual tension that build a bond between them in the short time they are together. Of course, the wagon ride doesn't last forever, and the 2d act follows them as they return to their real lives and deal with the repercussions of their time on the run.

The story moves pretty fast, as novellas tend to do. There's not as much time to become really fastened to the characters. But thank you to our time with the heroine in the concluding volume, she was a footling more than interesting. For that very reason, some readers may be disappointed that she doesn't become a meatier story. Matthew was kind of flat, but was an ok hero: sexy in the right places and loyal when it counts.

A quick, entertaining read with a satisfying HEA.

A nice story, only rather underdone, even for a brusk story. Not one of her best efforts. I kind of wish she would motility on from Maiden Lane and start a new series, this i seems pretty washed.
Elizabeth Hoyt is a New York Times bestselling author of historical romance. She too writes deliciously fun contemporary romance nether the name Julia Harper. Elizabeth lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with three untrained dogs and one long-suffering husband.
