Female Platy Swims on Side Flaps Back and Forth Aggressively to Other Fish

I have a sunburst platy, and sometimes he swims funny... He eats normally and usually sims around the tank like a normal fish, but sometimes i catch him swim upsidown for a few seconds... its not on a normal basis, but i was wondering if he was just playing?

This is not normal... What are your water parameters? Is anyone harassing it?

It could be a case of swim bladder problems, or your fish could've got nipped so fins damaged etc...

The water parameters are all perfect, and I haven't seen him do it since the day i moved him into a larger tank. I think i saw my betta nip him once (they were separated soon after) His stomach isn't swollen, no signs of parasites... he seems completely normal except for the occasional funny swimming. I'm thinking it may have just been in the ten gallon, as it was slightly over stocked- now its divided with two bettas.

If your Betta nipped him that may be the problem. Do you see any chunks missing from his fins? Also, of this just happened when you added him to your new tank were you gentle when you got him out? You may have damaged part of his fins... Is he letting the current just push him? He could be stressed if he's just letting it push him.

I meant that the platy stopped soon after being added to the new tank, but that was only a few days ago. Also, when i saw the betta nip him, I spent five minutes staring at him to inspect for any missing fins and didnt see anything...

Hmm... Was the current strong in your tank? If he's not doing it anymore you should be fine, if he does it again tell us though! Watch him for awhile... Good luck!

Your platy looks really nice and seems to be healthy! Yes, the pea will help the platy recover from swim bladder (if has). Good luck!

That should help him, just keep feeding it that for awhile, and keep, he'll come around soon.

I heard he is dong fine but incase it comes back, Since your water parameters are perfect, it could indicate a bacterial infection... If he DOES have one, put some teatree oil and that clears it up but make sure it is made for the aquarium.😊

What other fish do you have in that tank?

Ok so its been a few days without feedings and hes still swimming weird...
Hes in a tank with neon tetras and corys.

Does anybody have an idea of what i can do to help him? I dont have a lot of money and i have to buy some more fish today.... I didn't know neons and corys were schooling fish.

Hi, I would not recommend purchasing any fish until you figure out what is wrong with the sick one. What all have you done for him? I know you fasted him, how about a crushed pea? Look down over the top of him are his scales pineconed at all?

did he eat any of the pea? Is he bloated?

Mariee avatar

He ate the pea, I have him separated, as he is thin.

IK your not supposed to add more fish but I'd rather not have to deal with another disease caused by to few fish. None if the fish in the main tank acting strange

All I am saying is if your platy has something I would concentrate on that first. Yes the other fish will have reduced stress with a bigger group. But, what if? On that platy. Sorry if I am seeming difficult, is just food for fhought, and you can decide ok? 😊

Ok, I just ought two fish as I am worried about my cories becoming ill, but I'll continue to monitor all fish in the tank. Do you have any suggestions on what to do for the platy?

Upon inspection you are seeing nothing wrong on this fish? Red gills, red anal area? Didnt you just go thru a rough cycling on another thread? I have to wonder if by being compromised he has contracted an illness.

Yes i did go through rough cycling, however that was due to ammo-lock stalling my tank... Just a week after i got that stuff out the tank was cycled. A few days ago the gill were red, but they have became better today. He looks comp, etely normal except for the fact that he is thin and swims strangely. Also today was the first day this happened but he started trying to bury himself into the rocks and having what seems to be little spasms. When he was in the larger tank, this never happened and ive never noticed anything weird with any of the fish that are still in the main tank... 🙁

Hey everyone,
This platy is driving me mad. I put a tiny but if salt into his tank every three days and he has gotten a little better, I just notice him swimming more normally, only tilting every once and a while, he does still look like he's having some difficulty though... He's also gotten a little fatter and is pooing and eating normAlly
